Broken grave slab found at Elrig, Mochrum. The slab is only decorated on the front, which shows a cross with expanded arms, filled with a continuous interlace pattern made up of plain strands. On the shaft of the cross is a panel of frets, framed with a cable moulding. The stone dates from the period when the ‘Whithorn School’ was at its height, yet in decoration and shape it is quite different, showing that even at this time there was room for variation. This slab is one of a group of three of similar date found at or near Elrig – the other two are built into a house and a barn. They suggest that at that time this land has some religious connection. On display in Whithorn Priory Museum, Dumfries and Galloway.
