French, Louis XIII double tournois
A French double tournois made in 1612, during the reign of Louis XIII (1610 –1643). A bust of the young French king, facing right, adorns the heads side of the coin. The style is known as a ‘laureate head’ as a laurel wreath crowns the figure. Louis XIII is also shown wearing armour with a small flat collar.
The legend on the reverse translates as ‘Louis XIII King of France and Navarre’. This is written: ‘LOYS. XIII. R. DE. FRAN. ET. NAVA.A’. Also shown are three firs-de-lis and the coin’s value and year of issue: ‘+ DOVBLE. TOVRNOIS. 1612’.
