Carding machine
Carding machines were used in the preparation of cotton. Tangled cotton fibres were fed into the machine on rolls, where the fibres were drawn off onto a series of rotating drums lined with spiked strips known as cards. This cleaned and straightened the cotton prior to it being spun and woven into fabric.
These machines once operated on the first floor of the Mid Mill at Stanley Mills. The room would have been very dusty, which often caused fires to start. It was also incredibly noisy, so much so that the women who worked in this space created their own sign language so they could communicate with each other.
