Youth Heritage Challenge

Get Ready for the Youth Heritage Challenge

Six kids, some in scout uniforms, sit or stand around a table where they are organising pieces of coloured paper. One is a girl wearing a religious head scarf.

We are inviting schools to join us in Talking About Heritage. This is a unique opportunity for young people to influence Scotland’s next heritage policy. The project focuses on engaging pupils in meaningful discussions about how heritage should be understood, protected, and celebrated. Their contributions will play a role in informing policy and practice, making this a platform for youth participation and civic engagement.

Curriculum Links

The Talking About Heritage school workshop is designed to align with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) at both primary and secondary levels.

At the secondary level, the Talking About Heritage school workshop is designed to align with Scotland’s CfE Second Level Social Studies benchmarks and supports Learning for Sustainability (LfS), a cross-curricular theme that promotes sustainable development, global citizenship. As part of LfS, the workshop addresses Global Responsible Citizenship, which encourages learners to understand their role as responsible citizens in an interconnected world.

At the primary level, the workshop supports CfE outcomes at Second Level and also connects strongly to Learning for Sustainability, including Global Citizenship.

Through interactive activities, learners will:

  • Explore Scotland’s past and present.
  • Investigate how heritage shapes identity, communities, and our responsibilities as citizens.
  • Develop critical thinking skills by examining historical sources and considering diverse perspectives.

By linking heritage to learners’ own experiences and communities, the workshop encourages informed discussion and responsible decision-making, helping pupils understand cultural significance within Scotland’s evolving story and their role in shaping a sustainable future.

How your school can take part

We are inviting schools to deliver a short workshop with their pupils, led by one of your teachers. We will provide a comprehensive session plan with all the materials and guidance needed to run the session smoothly and effectively. The workshop is designed to be flexible and engaging.
