Overview

In 2025 Historic Environment Scotland commissioned 'Talking About Heritage', a national conversation about what heritage means to people today and how they want it recognised, protected and valued in the future.

A broad and inclusive programme of outreach and engagement activities was undertaken between September 2025 and February 2026. Overall, 6328 participants took part, representing communities across Scotland, ranging in age and background.

The results of 'Talking About Heritage' fed directly into the refresh of the 'Historic Environment Policy for Scotland' and the wider work of Historic Environment Scotland.
