An amazing photo of a full rainbow above the ruins of a castle, a loch and several mountains.

Scotland's historic places provide an awe-inspiring setting for all kinds of filming and photography, from major film and TV productions to incredible aerial shots.

Bringing the past to life

Our filmmakers and photographers are experts in making sure Scottish history looks at its very best. You might see them at a Historic Scotland site taking photos for our latest guidebook, filming a community or outreach project, or getting perfectly-timed action shots as hooves thunder and lances clash at events like Spectacular Jousting.

They're also on hand to document our vital conservation work, from epic projects involving ropes, cranes and helicopters, to the skilled, intricate work that goes into looking after the precious artifacts in our collections.

We also work with freelancers across Scotland, who contribute to an extensive image library which provides a visual narrative for the evolution of Scotland’s historic environment. And we accept applications to use Historic Scotland sites for all kinds of filming, whether it's a cinema blockbuster or an educational film.

Filmed at our sites
A man in 19th‑century clothing, lit with dramatic stage lighting, holds a glass vial aloft while speaking passionately to an audience seated in wooden gallery benches. Two young adults sitting outdoors on a hill with a city and water in the background. They smile toward the camera; the man has messy hair and sunglasses on his head, and the woman wears a yellow sleeveless top. An elderly nun clutches a tall stone pillar outdoors, looking emotional as wind and rain sweep across a bleak, rocky landscape.
