Commemorative plaques
Celebrating people from all walks of life through their connection to place and their contributions to Scotland’s history.
Throughout history, the people of Scotland have contributed to the richness of our national life through innovation, creativity and working towards a fairer society. From scientists and inventors to artists, explorers and campaigners for social justice we have centuries of significant individuals to recognise.
For more than 10 years, HES has been awarding and installing commemorative plaques to honour these special people. Our plaques can be found on buildings all over Scotland and tell a story of world-firsts, international success and selfless devotion to improving the lives of others.
You can explore all these commemorative plaques now, discover where they are located and why, and learn about the accomplishments of the people who have been celebrated.

Anyone whose life and achievements have made a difference to Scotland or Scots who made an impact internationally can be considered for a plaque. Who would you choose?
