The exciting exhibition titled
D.Y. Cameron: The Spirit of Line will run until 30 July, and will explore the artist’s exceptional talent as a draughtsman, and one of the most influential printmakers of the turn of the 20th century.
Part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, the exciting exhibition includes a newly acquired etching, Ponte Vecchio, Florence (1895), which will be displayed for the first time at the Georgian mansion.
Cameron produced over 500 prints, mostly etchings and drypoints, throughout his career. His subjects ranged from dramatic Scottish Highland landscapes, to the backstreets of European towns and atmospheric interiors.
Graeme Curran, Manager of Duff House, which is operated by Historic Environment Scotland, in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council and the National Galleries of Scotland said: “This display will showcase a collection of prints, drawings and watercolours from one of the most influential and prolific artists in the history of Scottish art.”
“It’s wonderful that people will also have the opportunity to view a newly acquired artwork by the artist at Duff House. Visitors will be able to take a closer look at this influential artist’s famous work while learning more about his skill and capability as a printmaker.”
The Spirit of Line is being held in partnership with The National Galleries of Scotland and also features the austerely beautiful Ben Ledi (1911) as well as an etching by Rembrandt, The Flight into Egypt: A Night Piece (1651), which was owned by Cameron and given to the National Galleries of Scotland by the artist.
Sir David Cameron was born in Glasgow and attended art classes in Edinburgh and at the Glasgow School of Art. He soon became an internationally known name in the art world with his work quickly becoming highly sought-after by art collectors.
The exhibition is included in the
Duff House admission price.
