Easdale Statement

Our statement on Easdale Island becoming a scheduled monument in August 2015.

Following a period of consultation with the owners, the local community, Argyll and Bute Council and other parties, the slate quarries and associated workings on Easdale Island were scheduled as a monument of national importance in August 2015.

The aim of scheduling is to recognise, promote and help protect this important site, which forms a key part of Scotland’s industrial heritage. Throughout this process, it was important to us that people had the opportunity to be involved in the debate, so that their views could be taken into consideration.

Scheduling is not a barrier to current use, but is intended to recognise and celebrate this very important site. Designation will not have any impact on existing activities, such as the World Stone Skimming Championships which take place at the quarries each year.
