Beta Help us improve: share your feedback on our new website.

Three volunteers wearing high-visibility vests stand outdoors in a green, wooded area, talking together. One holds a clipboard, and two have handheld radios, as they discuss and plan tasks at a historic site.

Volunteering with us is designed to be rewarding for everyone involved. Here’s how we make sure your experience is positive and supportive.

Our volunteer values

Historic Environment Scotland is a proud Charter Champion of the Volunteer Charter, developed by Volunteer Scotland and the Scottish Trades Union Congress and recognised as best‑practice principles for volunteering.

The Volunteer Charter guides our volunteer programme development and how we support and work with our volunteers to create a positive and respectful experience.

What we commit to our volunteers

Well planned projects

You’ll have the chance to contribute to meaningful projects, with guidance and supervision throughout.

Respect for your time

We understand that volunteering is a choice, and we respect the level of involvement you decide to give.

Safety first

Activities are risk assessed, and we provide the training you need to feel confident.

Inclusive approach

We aim to be welcoming to all and will consider reasonable adjustments to support health and wellbeing.

Open communication

We stay in touch regularly to make sure you’re getting the most from your role.

Expense reimbursement

We cover volunteer expenses so that cost is not a barrier to taking part.

Celebrating contributions

We recognise and celebrate the achievements of our volunteers. This includes free access to our paid attractions, group outings and gatherings, concert and performance ticket giveaways, and participation in award programmes.
