Working as a stonemason at HES

Stonemasons are a key part of protecting our historic environment, using conservation techniques to repair and maintain the places we look after for future generations to enjoy.

The stonemasons at HES are based across a number of depots, including Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, Perth and Arbroath Abbey. They have the chance to take part in further training to develop their skills in the trade.

I was working with the Antonine Wall squad doing grounds maintenance at the site of what was once the most northerly frontier of the Roman Empire nearly 2,000 years ago. I met a HES stonemason and I applied for an apprenticeship at Doune Castle and was successful. I’ve been working with HES for six years now as Assistant Works Manager in Perth.

The three words I would use to describe my job are: diverse, satisfying, and necessary.

As a stonemason at HES, it’s my job to look after and conserve properties. In my role, I get to work at historic sites and properties across central Scotland. To anyone interested in stonemasonry, I would definitely recommend it. It’s an incredibly satisfying trade to have, quite a unique one, and it’s a great foundation for a career in the heritage sector.

Five-year-old me would find my job very cool and would be interested in working at these amazing properties that we look after. Plus, what five-year-old wouldn’t want to work in a castle?!

The thing I enjoy most about my role is getting to work at some of Scotland’s most beautiful properties and taking care of our history on a daily basis.

My apprenticeship with HES has been lifechanging. It’s given me a career and a trade that I can take all over the world.

The most memorable moment of my career so far was taking the Stone of Destiny down to London for King Charles’ coronation – it was a fantastic experience and wonderful to be a part of history.

My proudest achievement during my apprenticeship was competing at the WorldSkills SkillBuild competition and winning the gold medal for stonemasonry.
