Overview

In 2014-16, Historic Environment Scotland worked with the Scottish Prison Service to review all the listed buildings in their estate.

There are only a small number of purpose built prisons remaining in Scotland dating from the nineteenth century with only three listed purpose built-prisons which remain in use by the SPS (HMP Perth, HMP Castle Huntly and HMP Dumfries).

This research report provides a narrative summary of the building type to inform the listing review.

Download the research report and visit our Heritage Portal to search for information about the listed prisons.
