Retired services
Information on services that were formerly part of our archives offering or have evolved over the years.
In 2025 we began retiring some of our webservices which could no longer be supported safely and securely. This page details which sites have been retired and where to find the information that they held.
Canmore
The Places (sites) and Archive records previously accessed through Canmore are now accessible via trove.scot where you can also search by maps. You can also download related datasets.
NCAP.org.uk
The National Collection of Aerial Photography (NCAP) has transferred its web content and digitised collections to a new website and Air Photo Finder platform at ncap.org.
ScotlandsPlaces
ScotlandsPlaces was a collaborative resource from HES, the National Records of Scotland (NRS) and the National Library of Scotland (NLS). Users can still access the materials directly from each of the contributing bodies:
HES material can be found on trove.scot
NLS material can be found at nls.uk and maps.nls.uk
NRS records are accessible through scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Scran
The Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN) was conceived as an educational resources website in 1995 and its founding partners were The National Museums Scotland, The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), the former Scottish Museums Council, now Museums Galleries Scotland and, by invitation, the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum. In 2008 SCRAN became part of remit of RCAHMS, and in 2015 SCRAN was incorporated into Historic Environment Scotland (HES).
As part of a project beginning in 2024, the SCRAN collection was accessioned into the main HES archive collection. The collection can be accessed on trove.scot
