Explorer Pass terms and conditions 2020-21

Any order for goods placed by you constitutes an offer to buy those goods at the price shown. We will then send you a confirmation of that order, but your offer is not accepted until we either send a further e-mail confirming that we have dispatched the goods or will dispatch the goods to you (whichever is the earlier). There is no contract between Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and you until we either send this second e-mail or dispatch the goods (whichever is the earlier); we are not obliged to accept any order until that time. Occasionally prices are shown on the website in error. If an error is discovered before the goods are dispatched, we are therefore entitled to refuse to accept any order for the goods at that price, and to contact you to offer the goods at the correct price.

View our Consumer Terms of Use for information on how we supply Explorer Passes through our online booking system.

For information on how we handle your data, please read our Privacy Notice.

Explorer Passes entitle the holder to free admission to included Historic Scotland properties as advertised. For a list of sites and opening times, please consult our website.

These passes do not include properties in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, members of the Historic Houses Association, the Palace of Holyroodhouse or those in care of private trusts.

Holyrood Abbey is in our care, but to visit the abbey you must pay the entrance fee to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The Explorer is valid for seven days from your selected visit date.

The pass allows the holder one visit to each of the participating HS properties.

Prices are subject to change.

Passes booked online can be printed before arrival, or will be available to collect from any HS SITE THAT IS OPEN on the selected start date. The booking reference provided in the confirmation email must be provided on collection. Opening times for our properties do vary and you should check in advance.

One Explorer Pass will be issued per person. Exception is Family Pass.

Purchase of a pass does not guarantee entry to a HES property. All visits to HES properties must be booked online in advance – see access section below.

Not valid in conjunction with any other offer, promotion or discount.

Explorer Passes are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable.

You must not sell, auction or transfer any element of the Explorer Pass.

No cash refunds for any unused days of the Explorer Pass.

Historic Environment Scotland will not be held responsible for any lost passes. Lost or misplaced passes cannot be replaced or refunded.

No part refund will be given in the event of the closure of any property due to adverse weather conditions, health and safety or other operational reasons although a ticket to revisit the property may be issued at the discretion of the management.

Historic Environment Scotland reserves the right to request proof of age and can confiscate the pass and refuse entry to anyone with the wrong category of pass. Categories are: Adult (16-59), Concession (60+, students in full time education and unemployed), Child (5-15) and Family (two adults and up to three children aged 5-15). Student ID will be required, and children must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years.

Misuse of the Explorer Pass will result in withdrawal.

Under 5’s go free, but must be included in the number of people when booking a visit – see access section below.

Access to HES sites with an Explorer Pass

An Explorer Pass entitles the Passholder to admission to participating properties over a 7 day period subject to the operating calendars of the property and any applicable exclusion dates that apply at the relevant time. The opening and closing dates of participating properties may be changed by HES during the Pass Term and any area within the property may be closed, for maintenance, health and safety and/or other operations reasons.

DATES EXCLUDED FROM YOUR PASS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

28-30 November 2020 inclusive

Access to HS properties are subject to availability and capacity.

Passholders may be subject to additional applicable charges such as parking fees. Please refer to the website for details of the properties to which additional charges apply.

The Explorer Pass does not guarantee immediate entry to a HS property at any time.

Passholders are required to book an available timeslot or pre-book their entry in advance in order to guarantee entry to a property, otherwise they will not be permitted entry. Please note that all timeslots are subject to availability and so to guarantee a specific timeslot, booking in advance is strongly recommended. Passholders should book an available timeslot online by visiting the HES website.

All passes must be displayed on arrival at each property along with proof of reservation of a timeslot for entry.

Explorer Passes will not be accepted at any of the participating properties after 7 days of the valid start date, even if a timeslot for a property has been booked.
