Libraries are an important part of Scotland’s educational and social history. The public library system as we now know it began with the passing of the Public Libraries (Scotland) Act in 1853. Today there are around 560 library buildings in Scotland and around 360 of these were purpose-built. These structures are among our finest public buildings today.
