Technical Paper 33: Masonry Pointing and Joint Finishing

A cover page showing a historic wall using lime pointing

This paper is presenting evidence of the variety of pointing and joint finishing styles found in Scotland from the 17th to the 20th century.

As an important part of the functional and aesthetic feature of a building, this paper gives an overview of how these styles vary over time. It also gives evidence of different styles based on region and importance of building.

The paper is comprised of two parts, Part 1 is a discussion on the evolution of finishes and Part 2 is a gazetteer of the sites visited during the survey.

A table showing different styles is presented at the end of Part 1.
