The assemblage of Early Medieval carved stones housed in Govan church and the associated crosses from the surrounding area represent an important yet at times overlooked aspect of Scotland’s rich “Dark Age” sculpture.
In this talk, former HES Measured Survey Manager John Borland will give a visual tour of the Govan School stones: recumbent cross slabs, freestanding or high crosses, monumental hogbacks and of course the astonishing monolithic sarcophagus.
