Winter Solstice at Maeshowe Chambered Cairn

Tuesday 21 December 2021

The winter solstice at Maeshowe is a spectacular light-show which occurs during the shortest days of the year. Join us on Orkney from the comfort of your home as we tell you about the important connection between Maeshowe and the winter solstice; and hear from people young and old who have been inspired by the solstice in our online film. There will be a premiere of a new poem inspired by the solstice and created by Alison Miller, the Orkney Scriever and one of the local Orkney storytellers Tom Muir will present a short story about the Maeshowe ‘hogboon’.

This is a wonderful chance to enjoy images of the solstice light effect, hear from local people on Orkney and how much this magnificent site means to them.

This event will be available free via livestream on our Facebook page and Youtube channel.

Orcadian artist, Louise Barrington, has been working with the local primary school children to create artwork inspired by Maeshowe and linking this with the idea of light and dark. The exhibition is free to visit and will be on display in the visitor centre from Friday 3 December 2021 until 13 February 2022.
