This talk is delivered by Dr Phil Back. Originally intended to provide for casual visits to the countryside by car, and to attract motorists away from more scenic or vulnerable landscapes, Scotland’s Country Parks gradually evolved from this negative, defensive approach to embrace much more positive aims linked to recreation, conservation, education and heritage protection.
Culzean, the first one, celebrated its fiftieth anniversary of designation in 2019. But it did so against a background of drastic funding cuts, raising questions about the future of these parks. This talk will explore the origins of these landscapes, their significance as a designated landscape, and the challenges they now face, which may mean we lose some before long.
