Greenknowe Tower

  • Gordon, Scottish Borders

Overview

View a handsome tower house standing tall on what may be the mound of an earlier castle.

Greenknowe Tower bears the date 1581 in an inscription above the entrance doorway. In fact, it’s a substantial reworking of an older building, possibly the first Scottish castle of the mighty Gordon clan.

The carved lintel above the doorway and the tower’s original iron gate are rare survivals.

Made from red sandstone, the tower house is attractively situated among ageing deciduous trees and is surrounded by grassy marshland.

Opening times

The grounds are accessible.

Due to access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections, there is currently no visitor access to the tower.
