WWI Project Grants

Find out how to apply for a Grant to help with your WWI project.

All Scottish schools can apply for a Grant to help with your WWI project, worth up to £250.
The scheme is part of the Scottish Government’s five-year WWI Commemorative Programme to mark the centenary of the First World War. Its aim is to help pupils develop their understanding of the causes of the First World War and its impact on people’s lives.
Schools have two options for the type of project they wish to create; WWI Conversations event or Women in WWI Project.

WWI Conversations Event Award Criteria

The school should host an event to discuss the lessons learned from WWI and the Commemorations period. The event should be organised by learners and should include a multi-generational and community aspect. The conversation should take place around a number of key questions such as:
  • What have I learned from all this?
  • What kind of people are we 100 years on?
  • Would you have gone to war?
  • What would the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in WWI think of the society they died for today?
The main condition of the grant is that a short film is made (2 mins or less) of the event, capturing the key points of the discussions. This film must then be sent to: lynne.robertson@educationscotland.gsi.gov.uk. These films would then be part of an archive of learning about WW1 and the commemorations period and may be used in future events and on the Education Scotland website.

WWI Women in the War Award Criteria

The project should research the role of women in the war, or a local suffragette. The main condition of the grant is that a short film is made (2 mins or less) of the project, capturing the key points. This film must then be sent to: lynne.robertson@educationscotland.gsi.gov.uk. These films would then be part of an archive of learning about WWI and the commemorations period and may be used in future events and on the Education Scotland website.
