The abbey grounds and shop are open.
There is currently no visitor access to the abbey due to restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections. Find out more about our conservation work.
Despite being a place of worship, this Cluniac monastery saw its fair share of conflict. The monks’ loyalty to Robert the Bruce eventually saw Crossraguel severely damaged in the Wars of Independence.
What to see and do
- Marvel at the abbey’s completeness – the monks’ church, cloister, chapter house and even dovecot still remain
- Take in the choir’s fine, 15th-century architectural details
- Enter the chapter house to see its simple benches for the monks and ornate, arched seat for the abbot
- Peek inside the tiny, two-roomed dwellings beyond the cloister where aged and infirm monks lived in the 1400s
