This effigy of an unnamed warrior is well protected by body armour. He wears a leather coat rather than the usual padded jerkin. His shield features a two-legged dragon, known as a ‘wyvern’, and a fortified tower. His head rests on a pillow and a dog lies asleep at his feet.

The effigy was once in the Reilig Odráin burial ground near Iona Abbey. This was a favoured burial place. It was near the remains of saints, where monks would say prayers for the souls of the dead.

It is now on display in Iona Abbey Museum.
