Grave slab - unknown warrior or chieftain
Dressed in a leather coat, rather than the usual padded jerkin, this effigy of an unnamed warrior is well protected by body armour similar to the IONA208. In addition he has an aventail, a flexible curtain of chain mail attached to the helmet and a well-defined chain mail gauntlet. His shield features a wyvern and a fortified tower. His head rests on a pillow and at a dog lies asleep at his feet.
Originally from the Reilig Odráin burial ground near Iona Abbey. This was a favoured burial place near the remains of saints where monks would say prayers for the souls of the dead.
