Opportunities available in Visitor Operations at Iona Abbey within the Central Region. 

The successful candidates will responsible for delivering a world-class service to visitors, while ensuring the safeguarding of Scotland’s historic environment.

The jobs currently being advertised are within the Commercial and Tourism, Visitor Operations Central Region with Historic Environment Scotland. You will be one of a team of twelve (yourself included) based at Iona Abbey (which receives some 65,000 visitors a year) and with responsibility for Iona Nunnery too.

As a working Church, Iona Abbey is an exciting site to work in. We share the building with a religious community so work closely with them as well as the local community.

We have a range of roles within the stewarding post – ticket sales, retail sales, site cleaning and guide. Everyone takes a turn at all of these so your working week will be varied. Iona Abbey also hosts performances and weddings so there is the opportunity to become involved in these and other events.

A full Visitor Operations Job Description is available below but standard Iona Abbey duties may include:

  • Welcoming HES visitors and assisting them to have an enjoyable and informative visit
  • Promoting HES Retail products, in an aim to drive business and enhance the visitor’s experience
  • Ensuring that the site maintains a high standard of presentation, through daily cleaning/adherence to Health & Safety procedures
  • Provide visitors with information relating to the history of the site through creative conservation and where appropriate guided tours
  • To assist with visits and events from school groups, community groups and external organisations
  • To follow HES policy and procedure in relation to Health & Safety, Human Resources and Finance where applicable

Iona Abbey is a vibrant and busy site attracting high visitor numbers, particularly during the summer months. Visitor Operations staff must be dedicated to delivering excellent customer service, in accordance with the Visit Scotland Grading Scheme.
