Some of the greatest champions of Scotland’s historic environment give their time and skills for free. Across the country, community initiatives, grass roots projects and individual volunteers are hard at work to protect and promote our nation’s rich heritage.
Our work relies on communities getting involved in this way. So we’re delighted to support a new awards programme to recognise the tremendous efforts of voluntary groups and individuals in preserving our built heritage. The Scottish Heritage Angel Awards are the first of their kind in Scotland and launched in 2015.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, which is to fund the awards, has already made a great impact with the English Heritage Angel Awards. Historic Environment Scotland is among the Foundation’s awards partners north of the border, along with the Scottish Government, the Scottish Civic Trust and Archaeology Scotland.
Community participation in heritage is essential to realising our 10-year strategy for Scotland’s historic environment, Our Place in Time.
The inaugural awards ceremony took place in September 2015 following a call for entries in April.
