Vikings bring history to life

The castle will be packed with Norsemen and women, offering visitors a fascinating insight into this lesser known part of history in the west of Scotland.

Run by Historic Environment Scotland (HES), visitors will get the chance to have a go at making their very own Viking cord bracelet, Thor’s Hammer out of clay, a Viking coin or even write their name in Viking runes. There will also be the opportunity to play with Viking board games such as Kubbs and Hnefatafl.

The History Bug will be in full effect as visitor’s head to the Living History Camps where they will have the chance to talk with the Vikings and find out all about their life, from what they ate and how they made bows and arrows to how they made their own clothing.

Laura Gray, Assistant Event and Filming Manager at HES, said: “2017, the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, is a special one for all of us here at HES. Across the year we will also celebrate a particular aspect of heritage, history and archaeology each month to highlight Scotland’s diverse historic environment.

“With so much to see and do, it’s set to be a thrilling and unmissable two-day event - you won’t be disappointed!”

HES, Scotland’s lead body for the historic environment, are encouraging families to ‘catch the history bug’ in the themed year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017.

Traders and Norsemen takes place from 12pm-4pm on Saturday 27 - Sunday 28 May, and is included in the price of admission. Entry is free for Historic Scotland members.
