Crichton Castle
Crichton Castle gallery
Though rarely the stage for significant events, Crichton is connected with some of Scotland’s most exciting moments. Influential residents included James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
Crichton Castle is currently closed and fenced for conservation work. However, the surrounding grounds remain open and provide a pleasant, tranquil walk.
The castle was built the powerful Crichton family in the 1400s. They constructed the tower house, great hall and courtyard, along with the nearby collegiate church.
Crichton passed into the hands of the Hepburns of Hailes, who became earls of Bothwell, in 1488. James, the 4th Earl, is know for being the third husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
The 5th Earl, Francis, transformed the castle in the late 1500s, adding an impressive north lodging built in a continental style.
