Ecclesiastical Exemption
Overview
This guide applies to listed buildings that are used as places of worship. Listed building consent should normally be obtained before any alterations are made to a listed building. However, places of worship are exempt from the need to obtain consent although some Christian denominations have volunteered to seek consent for external alterations.
This guide answers common questions on ecclesiastical exemption and is based on our understanding of how it is usually applied.
